Jim Leach

Jim Leach, born in Davenport, Iowa, began his academic journey at Princeton University, where he studied political theory and Russian. He continued his education at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, focusing on China and the Soviet Union, and later pursued further studies at the London School of Economics.
Following his academic pursuits, Leach joined the U.S. Foreign Service. In 1976, he transitioned to elected office, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He also co-founded the Congressional Humanities Caucus to promote the importance of the humanities in American life and was an early advocate for environmental protection.
After leaving Congress, Leach continued his commitment to public service through academia, teaching at Princeton and Harvard Universities. In 2009, President Obama appointed him Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a role he held until 2013. At NEH, he launched the “Bridging Cultures” initiative to foster cross-cultural understanding and emphasized the role of civility in sustaining democracy. He traveled to all 50 states to promote these efforts.
Returning to Iowa, Leach became a chair in public affairs at the University of Iowa and a visiting professor in the College of Law and Department of Political Science. In 2017, he was named interim director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art, where he helped plan the new Stanley Museum of Art, which opened in 2022. He and his family generously donated over 300 works of art to the museum, enriching Iowa’s cultural landscape.
