Jacquie McTaggart

Jacquie McTaggart has also spent many years teaching Iowa students of all ages, pre-schoolers through senior citizens. She received her BA degree from Upper Iowa, and subsequently began a teaching career that took her to elementary classrooms in Albert Lea, Minnesota, and in Waukon, Strawberry Point, Elkader, and Independence, Iowa.  Her years in the classroom spanned 1958  to 2001, her retirement year. Since that time, she has authored two books, both written after Jacquie was over 60. The first book, From the Teacher's Desk, offers suggestions for parents as they guide their children toward a successful school experience.

Jacquie’s second book, If They Don't Learn the Way You Teach, Teach the Way They Learn, is a guide for teachers. In this book she discusses the materials, practices, methods, and technology aides that motivate today’s learners, as well as some common teaching practices that are no longer effective and should be discarded.

Jacquie has written many articles for magazines, newspapers, and academic journals– including the Our Iowa magazine that many of you no doubt read. She has held ten 6-week memoir-writing sessions for senior citizens, and is currently doing one of these series at the Cedar Falls public library.

She has been a featured speaker at 75 International Literacy Association conferences, taught more than 100 summer literacy workshops for teachers, conducted professional development seminars throughout the Midwest, and still managed to serve 10 years on the Independence Public Library board. She subbed in Pre-Kindergarten through grade-12 classrooms in her local school district from 2001 through the end of the 2018 school year. For the past 17 years, she has been a volunteer instructor for “Nature Writing” at Buchanan County’s 5th grade Fontana Park Field Day. Jacquie has also taught 8-week Creative Writing courses for both Kirkwood and Hawkeye Community Colleges. Her mantra—It’s never too late and you’re never too old to try something new—reflects her commitment to lifelong learning.

Jacquie McTaggart is truly a lifelong learner who has had an impact on lifelong learners and lifelong learning at the community, state, and national level.  We are very excited to welcome Jacquie into the 2018 Lifelong Learner Hall of Fame.
