Book Excerpt
Once, Wink was in the car with some driving students, headed toward Norway (Norway, Iowa, that is), when he saw a woman who had pulled her car to the side of the road and was clearly in distress. He had the student at the wheel pull over and stop. Wink got out, went over to the woman, and asked if he could help her. She said she thought her car was falling apart. It was shaking and thumping, and she didn’t know what to do. Wink looked at the road behind her.
“I think,” he told her, “it was the rumble strips you just drove over.” Needless to say, rumble strips were new at the time. Beverly Kraft Winkie |

Stories and illustrations from the book Park It! have been on display in Iowa museums since 2012, including the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge, the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Knoxville, and the Grout Museum District in Waterloo. This virtual tour is a glimpse of the of the exhibit at the Iowa Transportation Museum. |
