Tim Charles

Throughout his career, Tim Charles has been committed to lifelong learning and to using that learning to make informed, sound decisions. He brought that approach with him when he joined Mercy in 2003 and continued with it when he began his tenure in 2007 as President and CEO of Mercycare Service Corporation and its subsidiaries, Mercy Medical Center; Mercy Care Management, Inc.; and the Mercy Foundation.

Over the last two decades, during his time at Mercy, embracing this lifelong learning approach has helped Tim to achieve some of his most rewarding accomplishments, and in the process enrich the lives of countless Iowans.  The Family Caregivers Center, for example, is the result of ongoing customer discovery that involves learning from customers themselves what their needs are and then implementing that feedback to provide the best possible experience for all. The process was used again to establish the DeWolf Family Innovation Center for Aging & Dementia, which has the goal of providing a better life for those living with dementia.

Other advancements brought to Mercy and to Iowa under Tim’s leadership include Mercy becoming the first hospital in Iowa to create an anti-human trafficking position; expansion of Mercy’s geographic footprint with multiple primary care, and urgent care clinics in Mt. Vernon, North Liberty, Tama, Marion, Monticello, Center Point and Cedar Rapids; co-founding the University of Iowa Health Alliance; opening the Sister Mary Lawrence Community Center; becoming the first in Cedar Rapids to initiate robotic surgery with the addition of the da Vinci robotic system; rising above the flood of June 13, 2008, and reinitiating services in just 16 days; and the opening of Mercy Health Plaza with dialysis, diabetes, and rehabilitative services.

Also under Tim’s leadership, Mercy Medical Center has been named to the Fortune/Merative 100 Top Hospitals list nine times.

In fact, Tim is so committed to Mercy, to the people he and the Mercy team care for, that he delayed his retirement, after 46 years in the health care field, for more than a year in order to provide stability through the Covid pandemic. His commitment to Mercy, his openness to learning from those they serve, and the environment and culture he established certainly contributed to his being named to the list of 83 community hospital CEOs to know for 2022 by Becker’s Hospital Review.

Without doubt, Tim's life and career reflect his love of lifelong learning and his work and accomplishments demonstrate how lifelong learning can help to enrich and heal lives.
